What’s Changing for Under 18 Drivers in Florida

The current 4-hour TLSAE course does not meet the new law for students under 18 and will not count toward their licensing requirements.

All drivers under 18 must complete the new 6-hour DETS course.

If you’re under 18 and completed a TLSAE course before August 1, 2025, you may still use your certificate until it expires.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need the DETS course?
Yes. Florida law requires every first-time driver under 18 to complete the 6-hour Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course before applying for a learner’s license. This is a state-mandated step that replaced TLSAE for minors starting July 2025.
Can I take this course on my phone?
Yes. Our online traffic school software is fully mobile-optimized. You can start the DETS Course on your phone, switch to a tablet or computer, and your progress will automatically save.
How is my certificate submitted?
We report your course completion directly to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). You don’t need to mail or upload anything. You’ll also get a copy of your completion certificate for your records.
What if I need help?
What is the difference between DETS and TLSAE?
Florida now uses two different first-time driver education courses depending on your age.
-
TLSAE (Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education) is a 4-hour course that every first-time driver who is 18 or older must complete before applying for a license. There are no alternatives for adults.
-
DETS (Driver Education Traffic Safety) is a 6-hour course that became mandatory on July 1, 2025 for all first-time drivers who are under 18. DETS includes more in-depth training on defensive driving, hazards, and teen-specific risk factors, and it has a required final exam.
If you are under 18, you must complete the DETS course.
If you are 18 or older, you must complete the TLSAE course.
How long does the course take?
The DETS course is six hours long, but you don’t have to complete it in one sitting. You can log out anytime and return later. The system saves your place.
What will I learn in this course?
The course covers driving topics including:
-
Traffic laws and safe driving practices
-
The effects of alcohol and drugs on driving
-
Defensive driving strategies
-
Sharing the road with others
-
Vehicle maintenance and safety checks
-
Emergency situations and hazard awareness
